Abstract

The Third Ward is an area. located adjacent to the central business district of Houston on the city's southeast side. Due to the nature of the community, the area has presente9 special social and political problems regarding redevelopment. This thesis project takes a different approach. It is an exploration of Third Ward's history, and existing conditions which seeks an alternative for redevelopment. The project is presented in two parts. Part one deals with the investigation of the Third Ward Area. It is intended to provide the reader with an understanding of the community's past, the views of public opinion toward it, and existing conditions within the area. For the most part, it serves as background information and as an introduction to the material contained in part two. Part two is intended to give a systematic analysis of the transportation needs in the Third Ward Area. The analysis will focus on the need for better accessibility from the surrounding regions, as well as with the available public transportation facilities. Part two also evaluates the area's
