Description of Abstract
This presentation will be presented in workshop format and cover a variety of strategies used at Morehouse College to achieve blended learning in several core and special topic courses. The general definition of blended learning is instructional content that is delivered in part online and in part by face to face instruction. However, we hope to show how new media and digital methodologies are important in an expanded notion of blended learning that uses the digital seamlessly during face to face instruction, not only when the student is on his or her own time. Moreover, the ability to include strategies for social media in course work offers benefits for achieving student learning outcomes. While there has been much emphasis on the way in which social media has brought political change throughout the world (for example, the Arab Spring), very little attention has been paid to the ways in which technology can efforts on our campuses. Indeed, “new media” tools can be used throughout the semester. Participants will gain experience using digital media such Twitter, Storify, and Shadow Puppet to organize and present content to students.
