Abstract
The purpose of this investigation was to examine independent and interactive effects of method of drug use, drug of choice, ethnicity, gender, age, marital status, educational status, and living status on the levels of anxiety and depression. Major hypotheses were formulated to determine if the variables method of drug abuse, drug of choice, ethnicity, gender, age, marital status, educational status, and living status had significant effect on the levels of anxiety and depression.
A subsample of 673 subjects who completed both socio demographic and psychological questionnaires was selected from 1,091 out-of-treatment drug users who participated in the Cooperative Agreement project for the National Institute on Drug Abuse during 1991 to 1995. Data was obtained from Affiliated Systems Corporate, conducting research by National Institute on Drug Abuse and analyzed with the use of multi-regression and three-way analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The Hypotheses were tested at the .01 level of probability to reduce the chances of type one error.
This study indicated that male crack cocaine smokers who lived in their own house/apartment had higher levels of anxiety that others; also, single male crack cocaine smokers who lived in their own house or apartment had higher levels of depression. Additionally, gender alone had an effect on the levels of anxiety and depression. Method of drug abuse had an effect only on anxiety levels, some of the major conclusions to be drawn from the findings include: anxiety and depression levels were higher in the crack cocaine smoker; anxiety and depression levels were higher in the male drug abusers; anxiety and depression levels were higher in those who lived in their own house or apartment; anxiety and depression levels were not affected by the drug user’s ethnic background, educational background, drug of choice, marital status, or age.
